Corner View - Música en Guatemala

This week's Corner View topic is music.
I got really excited at first because I do love music. I don't think it possible to spend 1 day without music...
Neither can they.

My two nephews having some fun on my brother's music room. I have the feeling he gets ridiculously nervous watching them play with his instruments, but he puts up with it in hopes of them wanting to become musicians some day. I really do wish they would.

Now that I've written the title "Musica en Guatemala" I noticed how many other things I could have photographed for this post. So I'm going to look for some old pictures and see what I can find about music in this country.

So this is what I found.

It is a poster of a Marimba presentation. But not any presentation, this is an Ensamble, which means 10 marimbas play at the same time, the same songs. The marimbas on this event are really famous, have been around for decades and are really loved by people.
Usually, music in marimba is enjoyed only by older people. Younger ones believe it funny to enjoy marimba. I've even heard kids and young adults answer, when asked what kind of music they like, say "everything but marimba" which I find sad and stupid.

Personally, I really like marimba. It is the sound of rural parties. When people say a party was really good: "They even had marimba".
You can find marimbas playing usually Sundays in parks or malls.

Marimbas usually have ten players, with baquetas (Hmm, sticks? as seen in the poster). All ten players in the same marimba, each of them playing a different beat, all of them knowing exactly what to do. They can be accompanied with drums, trumpets, cello, and other instruments depending on the creativity of the band. People dance to marimba. Their songs are also classified by genre: cumbia, blues, salsa, 6x8, corrido, beguine, marcha, etc.

Marimbas are best enjoyed with a tamal and a cup of hot chocolate.

So there you go, music.

Offensive

- Too much perfume when: in an elevator, the line in the bank, giving a hug.
- "I'm sorry I didn't call. Ive been so busy".
- Detergent ads. Are consumers really that naive to believe in such a "magical" laundry experiment?
- Fake doctor commercials. It translates to fraud and over promising, we all know it already!
- When a product has a "25% more" design in the package, but there is mysteriously 33% less product in it.
- People that are late to any place and event and still have the nerve to promise it wont happen again.
- Expressions of disgust.
- Not having a working internet connection and have the technician say: "all priority users are already connected".

Cosas Ofensivas

- "Disculpá que no te llamé, he tenido tanto qué hacer"

una risa que se diluye en ecos decrecientes;
un abrazo que se escurre al primer roce;
un perro que olfatea su correa de paseo en espera de su amo;
Solo entonces me aflijo y te llamo

Corner View - Street Fashion in Guatemala

Another song for the CornerViewers:

Corner View - My window in Guate

Hello!
I feel like I am posting this so late in the day! Which means I'm probably posting it Thursday for some people. I hadn't noticed that when its Wednesday morning to me, its afternoon to others and the next day to many. It is something so obvious but it still got to escape my attention, like so many other things in my mind. I guess I'll start posting on Tuesdays to get the schedule a lot better!

Hola!

About today's Corner View: your back window.
I live in a residential zone so most of what can be seen through my windows are houses. Lots and lots of houses. No buildings, just regular houses.

While driving this morning, I heard this song which made me think of you all Corner Viewers. Its called Coincidir and it goes along these words:

If life is just an instant I can't imagine,
so many centuries, so many worlds, so much space...
... and still coincide.

tantos siglos, tantos mundos, tanto espacio....
... y concidir.

Artist

I get sad sometimes. And scared. Angry. Nervous.
Feelings come easy for me... Ive always defined myself as nostalgic and deeply sentimental. Maybe that is why I feel like such an artist. Not really because of my art, but because of my need of art to explain myself. You don't have to be good to be an artist. All it takes is to feel the art.

And I do. Specially, art from God.
The world is such an amazing place, everything distributed so incredibly, functioning so perfectly.
Id never ever, be as talented. Id just rather appreciate the view and let this overwhelming feeling leave me in awe.

This weekend I went to Antigua, one of my favorite places. We went to have breakfast in Sky Café, a small - great place, good food, great view.
We spent all morning there, going inside some hotels and discovering wonderful places. Went later in the day to Cerro de la Cruz, the highest spot in the city. I loved it.

Entramos a muchos lugares, sólo a ver.
Linda visita.

Junio siempre trae mucho consigo.

June always brings a lot. This weekend, having lunch with my Grandmother and Is., and celebrated Xi.´s birthday, was the perfect opening weekend for it.

Garabatos morados, cebras y volcanes

Three things I really like: my daugther's art (whoever says something different is wrong), a zebra coming out of a store and the clouds on my way to work.
You can see the volcanoes in both pictures. The very triangular one is Agua and the one with smoke on the top, that mixes up with the clouds, is Pacaya.

I tend to be an easily distracted person and it seems to annoy almost everyone around me when I start taking photos of everything that calls my attention. But even then, I still think it is exceptionally delicious to enjoy the small things in life.

Corner View - The Beach in Guate

OK.. so for this week's Corner View, I was thinking of inventing a sort of "off topic" alternative .
I have no pictures of the beach. It is incredibly embarrassing since we have very nice beaches, here. After thinking about it for a while, I've decided it would be just wrong... so, I've borrowed a photo from someone else and I apologize...

A bit about the beach:
In Guatemala, the beaches from the Pacific Ocean have black sand. Yeap, black.
The sun heats up the sand and it is impossible to walk in it without shoes or sandals, except of course at the very shore where the sand is wet. It is common knowledge and kind of funny, that every time you take a bath in the ocean every single place in your bathing suit will be filled with black sand.
The water is very salty (not as the Dead Sea, but pretty salty even). The water is not calm at all, it is very fightsy, and terrible accidents have been known to happen. It is common to hear someone say "I don't fear the sea, but I respect it", which basically means they've been knocked down by a wave. (I find it hilarious when that happens).
At night, the beach gets crowded with animals: crabs, turtles and many bugs.

If you want to see beaches around the world, or around the corner for that matter, get over to Jane's.
